Organix - Review

When the team at Organix asked us to review some of their Goodies fruit and vegetable bars we couldn't say no...well it would be rude not to! Here's what our Mummies and Mini Monsters had to say about them...

When I first started giving Bella food I was so worried that she wouldn’t like anything and it would be a constant battle to give her food, but no, just like her Daddy she eats everything!

In the past 5 months she has fully embraced 3 meals a day and I have only found she doesn’t like plums and swede. I make all of Bellas meals and rarely use jars but I do keep snacks in the cupboard as they are easy to give her if I am in a hurry. I was really pleased to be asked to try out a range of fruity and vegetable bars from Organix.

As with all Organix products they come with the “No Junk Promise” which means only real ingredients are used (so no added sugar, salt, colours, or artificial additives). As mentioned, I make all Bella’s food myself so I know what she is having, the Organix promise is really reassuring that she is having good food.

We were sent a variety of flavours to try and I really liked the sound of the combinations! Apple & Orange, Cocoa & Raisin, Carrot Cake, Blackcurrant, Raspberry & Apple, and a vegetable and oat flavour which was Tomato & Carrot. WE tried the carrot cake bar first. I say WE as it sounded yummy so I wanted a taste! It was amazing! So full of flavour. The consistency was good and stayed together well. I imagined it would have lumps in but it was smooth and Bella managed to gum them really well (she only has 1 tooth at the moment!).

The bars have been great for a mid afternoon snack as they are perfect for her to nibble on and fill her up until dinner time. The handy size and consistency means I do not have to worry too much about her leaving a trail of food and mush all across the floor as they are not sticky. She tried all the flavours and the only one she wasn’t too sure about was the blackcurrent, to my surprise she loved the Tomato & Carrot bar.

I would rate them 5/5 as they are great for snacks, healthy and I like the fact they come in a vegetable flavour so it’s not always a sweet tasting snack.

We have always been fans of the Organix range, partly because of their fabulous nutritional content, but also because all their foods are incredibly yummy!

We were very lucky to receive a wide range of flavours to try out. The bars are all recommended as suitable for ages 12 months and over, so I gave a bar each to my elder children (who are 4 and 5) first. They were ever so soft and so easy to eat, that we decided to let baby Lex try one too. He is very good with finger food, and he found these very easy to get on with. The bars are soft enough to chew effectively, so he never choked or gagged, but any bits that fell off stayed large enough for him to pick up (excellent for his newly developing pincer grip)!

As my friend was visiting with her 9 month old son the day the bars came, we thought we’d share their fantastic-ness with little Leo too. He was just as big a fan – feeding himself the bar even though he’s often reluctant with finger food. We sent them home with a couple too –and he’s loved them.

All the boys absolutely loved the bars! Finley and Caleb tried the cocoa and raisin, with Finn telling me that his favourite bit was “the yummy raisins” and Caleb preferring “the really good chocolate bits.” Lex is only 8 months old, so obviously couldn’t say much, but did mumble something that sounded like “yummy,” so I’m taking it that he liked them, the mess he made would certainly suggest so too!

We really liked the idea of having the savoury tomato and carrot bars, so many snacks that we give our children are sweet, and I was very much looking forward to encouraging a different habit. All three boys ate the bars quite happily, with the eldest two asking if we can make sure we get some with the shopping next week!

If we could find one downside to the bars, it’s that we found them rather difficult to get open. My friend’s son is quite clingy at the moment, she is often doing things one handed, but had to ask me to open it for her. However, this is only a minor detail, and certainly not enough to put either of us buying any more!

So we get home from the post office and open up our Organix Goodies box to find 6 Tomato & Carrot bars, 2 Raspberry & Apple bars, 2 Cocoa & Raisin bars, 2 Blackcurrant bars, 2 Apple & Orange and 2 Carrot Cake bars. Yeay! I instantly open one of the Tomato & Carrot bars and hand it over to Logan where he was sat on the carpet. He loved it, spent ages eating it and making sure he got all the bits from his hands and from the floor. It was very soft and crumbled easily in his mouth, I was expecting them to be a bit firmer. I tried a little bit of it and thought it was disgusting, but then it's designed for a babies pallet, not an adults, and clearly Logan liked the taste of it. One thing to mention though is that the little bits got everywhere and left an orange stain on his bib and baby grow. They mostly washed out though and the few stubborn stains were gone after a few days in the sun.

The other fruity flavours were well received by both Logan and Daddy (who likes to help) and the Cocoa & Raisin flavour was definitely preferred by Daddy! I started breaking the bar into two or three pieces and just giving him the little bits and it seemed to make less mess that way. Logan didn't seem to like the Carrot Cake bar and after tasting it I think it was a bit too sweet for him, he much preferred the savoury or fruity flavours. I have been taking these bars with me when we go out and they are easy to give as a snack and fit nicely into your handbag.

The savoury and fruity flavours get a great big thumbs up from Logan, and the chocolate and cake ones got a thumbs up from Daddy!

I’m always on the look out for handy, relatively mess free snacks to keep in my change bag to recharge the smalls when we’re out on the go.  Many of the toddler snacks on offer tend to be crisps or biscuits so I was pleased to try the Organix cereal bars which I hoped would be a more substantial option.

Credit to the power of colour association as soon as we opened the box Daisy, my eldest (30months) asked for the “brown one”! She can sniff out cocoa a mile off!!

The bars were a bit hit and answered exactly what I hoped for. The girls readily devoured them and seemed satisfied with the snack (rather than the “what now mummy” I sometimes get!).  The bars were crumbly enough that I didn’t worry about my youngest choking, yet firm enough for her to independently feed herself.

The carrot and tomato ones were a messier option than some of the other varieties, but I likes the wide range of flavours.

I like the fact that the bars are available in a savoury range as well as a sweeter fruit range.  My girls definitely preferred the fruit range (sweet tooth like their mother!) but I will definitely be keeping both in stock. They are a perfect quick snack!

We’ve tried various types of cereal bars in the past so we were both very excited to try some new flavours from Organix.  I let my 2 year old son choose from the box and he was drawn to the red packaging of the savoury Tomato and Carrot Oat bars.

I explained they were carrot and tomato flavour which he seemed pleased about as he loves carrots but after tasting he looked very puzzled.  He persevered with it and ate half but kept checking the packet as if to check it was what he imagined it to be.

My 7 month old loved it and found it very easy to hold and eat.  It did leave quite a mess and the orange colour of the oats stained her bib.  Later in the day my toddler chose the Carrot Cake flavour for his snack and he loved it!  I tasted some and admit it was very yummy.  It was sweet without being sugary thanks to the natural flavour of carrot and raisins.

The Apple and Orange and the Cocoa and Raisin were also popular but Carrot Cake was our definite favourite. The bars are very easy to keep in our changing bag and perfect for a snack whilst out and about.

Organix bars are made with wholegrain oats and packed with fruit so you can be assured your children are eating a healthy snack.  The texture is nice and soft so perfect for younger children and the interesting packaging is colourful and appealing to children.
